Deleso A. Alford is currently the UNM Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity &
Inclusion Humanity Matters Visiting Professor through an innovative collaborative
opportunity with other HSC entities and she is also an affiliate member of the SOL
faculty. Her host department is Family and Community Medicine.

The aim of this collaborative effort is to foster meaningful connections and augment
impactful programming with, and for, faculty, staff, learners, graduates, trainees,
community members, and leaders.

She earned the Rachel Emanuel Endowed Professorship (Southern University Law
Center) for her ground-breaking work bridging legal and medical education by telling
stories-what she refers to as "HERstories" the unique and particularized lived
experiences of black women and women of color intersecting with health care and
research.

Professor Alford earned a B.S., degree in Psychology (Magna Cum Laude) at Southern
Univ. A&M College, a J.D. at SULC, and an LL.M. at Georgetown Univ. Law Center. Her
interest in bioethics led to her earning a Certification in Clinical Bioethics from the
Medical College of Wisconsin. Her national reputation as a scholar and speaker will
soon be memorialized as an inductee into SULC's Hall of Fame, recognizing lifelong
dedication and outstanding contributions to the legal field. The Association of
American Law Schools (AALS) recently selected Professor Alford as the 2025 recipient
of the Impact Legacy Award for her scholarship and legal advocacy in the historic
Henrietta Lacks' cases amongst other contributions.
